Feedback to a Conversation Skills Drama Workshop on Showing Interest with Alphington Primary School Year 7 students:

“I learnt how to be more confident and show people I’m interested in what they say… I felt like I wasn’t shy any more, like I could really talk to someone.”

“I’ll remember how to be a good listener.”

“I learnt when you’re having a conversation, you should pay attention and make eye contact whenever they are speaking.”

“I learnt to be open.”

“Listen to others because you will keep your friends.”

“I learnt trust and communication. These make me have more self-confidence.”

Alison Rodgers (Alphington School Teacher): “Great fun and very useful activities…the workshop was excellent.”

Julie Dunkerley (Hennock Primary School Headteacher): “The variety of activities was great and giving the reasoning behind them was excellent.”

Below this photo are sample conversation skills workshops I can offer students either as single sessions or as a course. Please also visit Storytelling and Storymaking page.

Workshop One

Title

Showing Interest

Method of working

A series of short purposeful drama activities involving extended speaking turns on the part of every student in pairs and small groups. These enjoyable activities will include a thorough exploration of how to show interest in what other people say in terms of nonverbal and paralanguage as well as short questions and vocalisations. Each activity has a clear and distinct aim which is made explicit to the group.

The workshop culminates in a student-generated mini-performance, where every student is both performer and active audience member.

Participants

Between four and thirty participants: 5-11 year olds, 11-16 year olds, adult students, special needs, referral units, teachers/staff

Length of workshop

60-180 minutes. Can run workshops for up to 5 hours in one day

Outcomes

Students will have explored how positive and active listening skills lead to successful social relationships. They will have learned a great deal about themselves and each other and created a performance through creative improvisation within a structured framework.

Workshop Two

Title

Turn-taking

Method of working

A series of short purposeful drama activities involving extended speaking turns on the part of every student in pairs and small groups. These enjoyable activities will include a thorough exploration of how to hold the floor when talking by using hesitation devices and body language, how to interrupt politely and take over your turn, as well as how to pass the baton. Each activity has a clear and distinct aim which is made explicit to the group.

The workshop culminates in a student-generated presentation: a dramatised guide to successful turn-taking.

Participants

Between four and thirty participants: 9-11 year olds, 11-16 year olds, adult students, special needs, referral units, teachers/staff

Length of workshop

60-180 minutes. Can run workshops for up to 5 hours in one day

Outcomes

Workshop Three

Title

Exchanging Personal Information (Reciprocal Self-disclosure)

Method of working

A series of short purposeful drama activities involving extended speaking turns on the part of every student in pairs and small groups. These enjoyable activities will include a thorough exploration of how people disclose information about themselves and their ideas in conversation and how reciprocal self-disclosure can result in successful personal relationships. Each activity has a clear and distinct aim which is made explicit to the group.

At the end of the workshop, a series of performed vignettes, created and rehearsed by pairs, explores how a guilty secret can threaten a friendship and how self-disclosure can save it.

Participants

Between four and thirty participants: 9-11 year olds, 11-16 year olds, adult students, special needs, referral units, teachers/staff

Length of workshop

60-180 minutes. Can run workshops for up to 5 hours in one day
